The Mikado

Monday 23-Saturday 28 May 2011 at The Oxford Playhouse

KO-KO: A terrible thing has just happened. It seems you're the son of the Mikado.
NANKI-POO: Yes, but that happened some time ago.
KO-KO: Is this a time for airy persiflage? Your father is here, and with Katisha!

Japan 2011, and within the Mikado's multinational company trouble is brewing. Nanki-Poo, heir to the business, has fled his father's watchful eye to escape marriage to the elderly unappealing Katisha. He has fallen hopelessly in love with the virtuous student Yum-Yum, who in turn is betrothed to Ko-Ko, her guardian - also an employee of the Mikado. This bewildering turn of events leaves Nanki-Poo in turmoil and despair; if he makes a pact with Ko-Ko to marry Yum-Yum, they will both be killed within the month. If not, he will have to face his father, and the continuing threat of a loveless marriage…

Will our hero be forced to marry Katisha? Will Yum-Yum win her true heart's desire yet avoid being buried alive? and will Ko-Ko escape being executed by the Mikado himself?

Oxford Operatic Society's production brings a modern twist, while retaining the wonderful dialogue and songs from this favourite of Gilbert and Sullivan operas - featuring among the enduring classics Three Little Maids From School , A Wand'ring Minstrel I, The Flowers That Bloom In The Spring, and all the other timeless numbers. This is a Mikado for 2011, not to be missed - just continuing an amazing tradition that started in March 1885, when it was first performed at the Savoy Theatre in London.
